Primary
Primary is an organized program of religious instruction and activity in the Church for children ages eighteen months to twelve years. Its purpose is to teach children the gospel of Jesus Christ and help them learn to live it. Participating in Primary helps children prepare for baptism and other ordinances.
You are dealing with choice spirits among the many that have been created. I am persuaded that in the veins of these boys and girls in your Primary organizations flows some of the best blood that this world has ever known. These are choice spirits. Many of them, I feel confident, have been held back to come forth in this, the greatest of all gospel dispensations, in preparation for the second coming of the Master.
No group of teachers in this church has a greater privilege to entice and to make an impression while that spirit is burning brightly in the souls of the children of men than do our Primary teachers.
When I approach a child, he inspires in me two sentiments: tenderness for what he is, and respect for what he may become.
Primary teachers are keepers of the jewels. What a glorious thing it is to have received the call to serve in the Primary. The Lord showed his love for the little children and he blessed them. Surely he loves those who teach them of his commandments and of his kingdom-those who bring them out of darkness into the light of the gospel. What a joy it is to share with our co-workers and those we teach, the testimony that God lives; that Jesus is the Christ, the Savior of all mankind; that there is a prophet of the Lord on the earth in our day. This knowledge brings to us peace in a troubled world. Troubles vanish and are replaced by joy in the hearts of those who work with little people so fresh from the presence of God and still untouched by the corruptions of the world. You are the keepers of the jewels-the preservers of our wealth.
